Former Facebook AI veteran Yann LeCun confirms executive chair role at AMI Labs
Yann LeCun has begun a new role as Executive Chairman at Advanced Machine Intelligence - AMI Labs, according to an update he shared on LinkedIn, marking the next step in his move away from Meta and into a new research-focused venture.
LeCun took to LinkedIn to confirm the appointment, stating that he had started the position in January. The move follows his previously announced decision to leave Meta after more than a decade in senior AI leadership roles.
AMI Labs is focused on research into advanced machine intelligence, with an emphasis on developing AI systems capable of reasoning, planning, and interacting with the physical world. The work builds on research directions LeCun has discussed publicly in recent years through Meta’s Fundamental AI Research program and his academic work.
Role follows exit from Meta AI leadership
LeCun previously served as Vice President and Chief AI Scientist at Meta, where he led long-term AI research strategy and founded the Fundamental AI Research division. He confirmed last year that he would leave the company to pursue the AMI research agenda through a new organization.
The AMI Labs role formalizes that transition, placing LeCun in an executive leadership position while continuing his research-driven approach to artificial intelligence development.
Alongside his position at AMI Labs, LeCun continues to hold multiple academic appointments at New York University, where he has taught and conducted research for more than two decades. His work spans machine learning, computer vision, robotics, and computational neuroscience, and he remains affiliated with several NYU research centers.
The LinkedIn update did not outline operational details of AMI Labs or timelines for research outputs, but confirmed that LeCun has formally begun the role.
Yann LeCun wrote, “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Executive Chairman at Advanced Machine Intelligence - AMI Labs!”
