Microsoft launches Microsoft Elevate and the AI Economy Institute, pledges $4bn for educators
Software provider Microsoft has launched two new initiatives – Microsoft Elevate and the AI Economy Institute – aiming to “ensure that as AI transforms our world, we’re putting people first”.
Microsoft also announced it will donate $4 billion in cash and technology to K-12 schools, community and technical colleges, and non-profit organizations to support their work in AI.
Microsoft Elevate is said to be Microsoft Philanthropies’ successor, bringing the company’s technology support, donations and sales for schools, community colleges and non-profit organization together.
Microsoft Elevate will also include the Microsoft Elevate Academy, which hopes to give 20 million people a chance to achieve an AI credential over the next two years. The organization will also advocate for public policies around the world focused on AI education and training.
The company also announced the launch of the Microsoft AI Economy Institute, a thinktank exploring how AI is changing work, education, and productivity.
The Institute will support academic research exploring the potential of AI. Current projects include evaluating the labor market value of AI skills and credentials and investigating how generative AI can drive academic innovation.
Microsoft says the Institute’s work will inform Microsoft Elevate’s programs and initiatives, helping to prepare people for the AI economy.
Writing on LinkedIn, Microsoft’s Vice Chair and President Brad Smith said: “Artificial intelligence is no longer a concept of the future—it’s personal. It’s shaping how we live, work, and connect with the world around us. That’s why today we’re announcing Microsoft Elevate and the AI Economy Institute.
“Microsoft Elevate unites donations, sales, and services for key sectors, but also drives cutting-edge efforts to expand AI access and skills globally.
“Backed by the public policy voice of subject matter experts, this initiative reflects a clear commitment: the most important work ahead isn’t just about building smarter machines—it’s about helping people thrive alongside them.”
