Indiana University provides 120,000 students, faculty, and staff with access to ChatGPT Edu in second-largest rollout for OpenAI
Indiana University is providing its students, faculty, and staff with access to OpenAI’s ChatGPT Edu, a version of the large language model specifically designed for use in higher education.
ChatGPT Edu offers AI-powered tools for teaching, learning, and conducting research. All 120,000 students, faculty, and staff will be given access to ChatGPT Edu, in the second-largest rollout for OpenAI.
Starting in September, staff and faculty will be given institutional access to ChatGPT Edu. Indiana University students will be given access in January 2026.
More than 30,000 members of Indiana University’s community are already using the free version of ChatGPT, having registered with their university email address, which the organization says demonstrates demand for the offer.
“Indiana University is empowering our students, faculty and staff to lead as AI transforms every sector of the economy,” Pamela Whitten, President at Indiana University, comments. “Working with an industry leader like OpenAI gives the IU community cutting-edge tools that will enhance learning, increase efficiency and prepare our graduates to thrive in the careers of today and tomorrow.”
“Indiana University is taking a historic step forward with one of the largest ChatGPT deployments in the country,” adds Leah Belsky, Vice President of Education at OpenAI.
“By extending access to more than 120,000 students, faculty and staff, IU is enabling its community to fully integrate AI into learning, research and everyday campus life. Students will be able to use AI to advance their learning goals and graduate with practical, hands-on experience – essential preparation for an increasingly AI-driven workforce.”
The ChatGPT offer is one of several ways the institution is integrating AI across its academic offerings, with a free GenAI 101 course launched in August 2025.
“By embracing AI, we are demonstrating IU’s ability to be nimble and visionary,” adds Aaron Neal, Interim Chief Information Officer, Deputy Chief Information Officer, and Associate Vice President for Networks and Security at Indiana University.
“We are meeting students where they are, preparing them for where they need to go and ensuring they are equipped to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. This partnership empowers IU to confront the challenges facing higher education today.”
