Golden Peak Media acquires Creativebug to grow online craft education and expand subscription-based learning

The acquisition brings together two craft-focused content providers and adds more than 1,000 video classes to Golden Peak’s existing catalog of creative learning tools and maker resources.

Golden Peak Media has acquired Creativebug, an online craft learning platform previously owned by Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores. The deal brings together two organizations focused on arts and crafts education and broadens Golden Peak’s digital content offering.

Golden Peak Media produces print magazines, newsletters, online classes, and events for hobbyist and professional makers in art, sewing, and quilting. Creativebug, founded in 2012, offers a subscription-based platform with more than 1,000 craft tutorials available on demand. It serves both individual consumers and public libraries across the United States through institutional licensing.

Digital platform to operate independently under new owner

Creativebug will continue operating from its Berkeley, California headquarters. Liana Allday will remain general manager, and the platform will retain its current model offering monthly and annual subscriptions.

David Saabye, chief executive officer at Golden Peak Media, says: “The synergy between Creativebug and Golden Peak Media’s content, consumers, and communities made this acquisition a very natural fit. This alignment will allow even more enthusiasts to be inspired throughout their entire creative journey with continued support for lifelong learning.”

No disruption expected for users or institutional clients

The announcement suggests there will be no immediate changes to Creativebug’s offering, though how the platform integrates with Golden Peak’s existing digital products remains to be seen. Golden Peak currently offers more than 5,000 on-demand classes across its brand network, along with magazines, digital patterns, and maker events.

Saabye adds: “The Creativebug team has built a strong business based around their robust online platform and niche audience segments. I have been impressed with the talent and creativity of the team, and we are all enthusiastic to continue to serve and support these communities and audiences without interruption.”

Liana Allday, general manager at Creativebug, says: “We are over the moon to have found a new home that shares our passion for making. Golden Peak's involvement in the craft community and commitment to high-quality media is clear in everything they do, and we are thrilled to join the portfolio as their newest digital brand.”
