Anthropic selected by UK Government to launch AI assistant for gov.uk services
The UK’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) has selected Anthropic to build an AI assistant to help people navigate services online and get tailored advice.
Initially, the tool, which will be powered by Claude, will be used to support job seekers joining or re-entering the workforce, helping them access training and understand the support and resources available to them.
The AI assistant will retain context across multiple interactions, preventing users from needing to start again from scratch with each use.
Anthropic says users will have “full control over their data” including the ability to opt out at any time. Its engineers will work alongside civil servants at the Government Digital Service to build the tool, ensuring the Government can independently maintain the system after development.
The news follows after Anthropic signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the UK Government in February 2025, aiming to explore how AI could transform public services. The gov.uk AI assistant is the first announced outcome of the partnership.
“We’re excited to partner with the UK government to help deliver on the AI Opportunities Action Plan,” says Pip White, Head of UK, Ireland and Northern Europe at Anthropic. “This partnership with the UK government is central to our mission. It demonstrates how frontier AI can be deployed safely for the public benefit, setting the standard for how governments integrate AI into the services their citizens depend on.”
“Anthropic’s UK team plays a key role in advancing our models at the frontier and transforming the public sector and broader British business landscape, from fast-growing startups like incident.io and Wordsmith to enterprises like WPP and London Stock Exchange Group,” adds Chris Ciauri, Managing Director International at Anthropic.
