University of Palermo deploys Motorola Solutions AI video and access control across campuses

The University of Palermo has installed more than 600 AI-enabled cameras and centralized access control across 400+ gates, using Motorola Solutions’ Avigilon platform to detect incidents and manage classroom access in real time.

Motorola Solutions, a provider of video security and access control technology for public safety and enterprise customers, provides the University of Palermo with AI-powered video and access systems across its sites in Palermo and surrounding cities.

The deployment includes more than 600 cameras at indoor and outdoor locations, with centralized control of classroom and facility access before and after lectures.

Professor Pietro Paolo Corso, rector’s delegate for Extraordinary Projects and University Digital Infrastructure at the University of Palermo, says: “The security of people, facilities and equipment is one of our top priorities. We need to manage access to our campus and have an understanding of any potential emergencies or threats in real-time to create a safe environment where creativity, culture and knowledge can thrive.”

AI analytics and appearance search support response

The university is using Motorola Solutions’ Avigilon video management software to manage, analyze, and process video from across the network. Advanced analytics can flag unusual activity such as crowds running or smoke, while appearance search can locate people and belongings in footage using descriptions of physical traits or clothing. The system issues real-time alerts for events like unauthorized entry to reduce manual monitoring and minimize false alarms, and it supports centralized access control across over 400 gates.

Founded in 1806, the University of Palermo is among Italy’s largest institutions, with about 45,000 students and 1,700 staff across 16 departments and a School of Medicine and Surgery. The new deployment spans departments and the rector’s office, consolidating fragmented legacy video systems into a single platform intended to improve oversight and incident response.

Lorenzo Spadoni, sales director Southern and Western Europe and country manager Italy at Motorola Solutions, says: “Our security and access control solutions provide unprecedented oversight, allowing control room staff and security personnel to manage activity and react to incidents anywhere on campus in real time. We’re providing the university with a unified video security and access control solution that replaces many fragmented legacy video systems, enabling the security staff to enhance safety for students while improving operations.”
