National PTA names Howie Berman executive director to lead education and family engagement efforts

Berman brings over 20 years of experience in nonprofit and education-focused organizations and will assume the role on May 19, 2025.

National PTA has appointed Howie Berman as its new executive director, effective May 19, 2025. The organization, which advocates for family engagement and public education across the United States, announced the decision following a national search.

Berman has more than two decades of experience in nonprofit leadership roles, including more than 12 years with education-focused associations. Most recently, he served as interim executive director of the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations (NFMLTA), which supports research and advancement in language education.

Background in education and nonprofit leadership

Prior to his work with NFMLTA, Berman held leadership roles at the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), where he served as both chief operating officer and executive director. Earlier in his career, he was director of information technology and membership services at the American Society for Cell Biology.

Yvonne Johnson, President of National PTA, says: “We are thrilled to name Howie our new executive director. Howie brings extensive experience in education and the nonprofit association space, which will be a tremendous asset as our association continues our critical work to make a difference for the education, health, safety and well-being of every child and make sure all children, families and schools have what they need to thrive.”

Priorities at National PTA

Founded as a national network of families, educators, and community leaders, National PTA promotes public education and family-school partnerships. Berman’s appointment comes at a time when the organization continues to advocate for inclusive education policy and expanded support for schools and children.

Howie Berman, incoming executive director of National PTA, says: “National PTA has an extraordinary, impactful legacy. There could not be a more important time for being a powerful voice for all children and families, supporting and advocating for our nation's public schools and teachers, and ensuring every child's potential becomes a reality. I look forward to working with the dedicated Board of Directors, talented staff, state and local affiliates, and countless volunteers on behalf of our nation's students, families and school communities and in support of PTA's mission.”
