Google’s philanthropic division supports AI literacy and entrepreneurship in Detroit with ‘AI in the D’ initiative
Working in partnership with Google’s philanthropic division, Google.org, Detroit-based non-profit the Chapman Family Foundation has launched ‘AI in the D’ initiative.

The scheme, supported by a $200,000 grant, aims to equip high school students in Detroit with foundational skills in AI as well as entrepreneurial training.
The one-day workshop will support more than 100 students, providing access to laptops, expert facilitators and a chance to compete for cash prizes by pitching AI-driven businesses.
‘AI in the D’ reflects a shared mission between Google.org and The Chapman Family Foundation as the two organizations work to increase economic mobility.
"As AI technologies evolve rapidly, the digital divide is expanding," explains Tamira Chapman, Founder of the Chapman Family Foundation. "Without early exposure and access, young Detroiters risk exclusion from the very economy shaping their future. AI in the D is our commitment to ensuring they're equipped to lead, not left behind."
Winton Steward, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy for the Midwest at Google, adds: "At Google.org, we believe that investing in youth entrepreneurship and digital literacy builds long-term opportunity. We're proud to support the Chapman Family Foundation's vision and to help young people in Detroit innovate and thrive."
Google.org says its partnership with the Chapman Family Foundation will allow ‘AI in the D’ to scale its impact locally and hopes it will serve as a model for national replication.
