Duolingo reports reaching 50 million user milestone as it says AI features attract paid subscribers and increase revenue

Duolingo has shared financial results for the third quarter of 2025, reporting that its language learning app now has 50 million daily users, and this is growing at a rate of 36 percent year-on-year.

“We passed a major milestone this quarter: more than 50 million people now use Duolingo every day,” Luis von Ahn, Co-Founder and CEO of Duolingo, comments. “That kind of scale gives us a unique opportunity to deliver impact, and we’re doing that by making our product even more engaging and efficacious.”

Duolingo also reported increased revenue, totalling $271.7 million.

“We’ve had a great 2025 so far, with Daily Active Users and revenue both up 40 percent or more in the first nine months, compared to the same period last year, all while expanding profitability,” von Ahn adds.

“We think we are early in our journey, and by continuing to put learners first, we believe we’ll become a much larger business over the long-term.”

Earlier this year, Duolingo announced plans to move towards an “AI-first” model and shared that it would no longer work with contractors on any tasks that could be completed by AI.

In a call with investors, Duolingo said it would continue to focus on AI-driven educational improvements to the app.

“We believe AI will fundamentally transform education and we have line of sight to building a product that teaches better than ever before. That’s what makes this such an exciting moment for Duolingo,” van Ahn added.

Duolingo also plans to use AI for “smarter teaching” that adapts to each user and other uses “in the background”.

The CEO also revealed plans to make Duolingo “a lot more social” with guided video calls, player-versus–player chess games and a revamp of its music course.
