Canva launches full design creation inside ChatGPT as AI-powered collaboration expands
Following OpenAI’s announcement of in-chat apps and its new Apps SDK, Canva has launched a feature that enables users to design, edit, and preview visuals directly within ChatGPT.
The move builds on Canva’s earlier deep research connector, which allowed users to find and summarize existing Canva content in the chat environment.
Canva, the Australia-based visual design platform, said the integration streamlines how users produce creative content by blending conversational AI with real-time visual design. Users can now request presentations, social media posts, or marketing assets through simple prompts and see the results instantly in ChatGPT.
Editing, translation, and previews built in
The new app introduces full-screen previews and context-aware design creation. Users can instruct ChatGPT to generate, refine, or translate content, applying changes instantly across slides and templates. Canva said the integration can modify tone and phrasing while preserving layout and formatting, reducing repetitive design tasks.
The company explained, “Imagine telling it to ‘remove all the jargon from this deck’ or ‘make this presentation more conversational,’ and watching 50 slides transform instantly. Every headline, every bullet point, every caption updates simultaneously while your design and formatting remain untouched.”
Translation capabilities let users localize designs into languages such as Spanish or Japanese, making global content adaptation part of the same workflow.
Social media posts highlight collaboration with OpenAI
Canva executives took to social media to discuss the partnership and the new capabilities. Anwar Haneef, General Manager and Head of Ecosystem, wrote on LinkedIn: “Super excited to share this one—you can now create and edit Canva designs directly in ChatGPT! It was fun to see the OpenAI team demo this live(!) at OpenAI DevDay. Whether you’re making a quick post, a deck, or a flyer—just ask ChatGPT to make it in Canva and you’ll see it come to life instantly.”
Co-founder and COO Cliff Obrecht also commented on LinkedIn, adding: “So excited to launch this incredible partnership with OpenAI so you can create Canva designs directly within ChatGPT. Incredible work to all the teams on both sides who made this possible and this is just the beginning!”
Part of a wider creative ecosystem
The integration follows Canva’s earlier deep research connector, which allows users to search and summarize their Canva files within ChatGPT. That feature helps teams quickly retrieve campaign insights, lesson plans, and previous projects without switching between tools.
In its blog, Canva said, “These launches represent a fundamental shift in creative workflows. As design becomes native to AI conversations, Canva is establishing the visual layer of the AI era—powering creativity wherever ideas emerge.”
The Canva app in ChatGPT is available to Free, Plus, and Pro users outside the EU. It joins OpenAI’s initial wave of app partners that includes Coursera, Booking.com, and Spotify. The company said developers interested in building similar integrations can access the Canva MCP Server through its developer community.
Obrecht said the new collaboration marks an inflection point for creative workflows in the age of AI. “This is just the beginning,” he said.
