OpenAI offers US university labs free GPT-Rosalind access for up to 12 months
The new academic plan provides up to 30 sponsored seats per eligible lab, with access to the specialized life sciences model subject to approval
OpenAI's Rosalind Academic Plan offers eligible US university research labs up to 12 months of sponsored access to AI tools, including GPT-Rosalind following approval
OpenAI has introduced the Rosalind Academic Plan, offering eligible research labs at US universities up to 12 months of free access to its AI tools, including the option to use GPT-Rosalind, a specialized model developed for life sciences research.
The initiative provides up to 30 Business Standard seats per lab at no cost, with GPT-Rosalind access subject to a separate trusted-access approval process. Researchers will also be able to use OpenAI's commercially available frontier models, subject to plan usage limits.
The offer is currently restricted to academic labs at US universities and does not include API access.
GPT-Rosalind combines specialized AI reasoning with Rosalind Workbench, which supports the use of scientific tools across medicinal chemistry, genomics, wet-lab assistance and other research applications.
Academic researchers gain access to specialized AI tools
OpenAI says academic laboratories are already exploring GPT-Rosalind for work ranging from protein design to understanding neurodegeneration.
One example comes from the Zhao Lab at UCSF, which has used the model to gather drug-property information for quantitative drug development.
"GPT‑Rosalind helped me gather drug physicochemical parameters faster. PubChem and NCBI tools helped me work across ten drugs while refining the distinction between predicted and experimentally measured values," the lab states in an example published by OpenAI.
The company positions the model as a research assistant rather than a replacement for scientific expertise. In its LinkedIn announcement, OpenAI wrote: "Researchers bring the expertise and judgment to evaluate the evidence and decide which ideas to pursue."
Research data shared through the Rosalind Academic Plan will not be used to train OpenAI's models by default, according to the company.
Access requires institutional verification and approval
Participation is managed through principal investigators (PIs) and laboratory leads, who can apply on behalf of their teams and oversee access for up to 30 named members.
The application route depends on the university's existing arrangements with OpenAI. Labs at institutions without an Enterprise agreement can apply directly through the Rosalind Academic Plan, while those at universities with an existing agreement must request access through their institutional Enterprise account.
Before granting access, OpenAI verifies the institution and lab lead, reviews the applicant's professional background and research activities, and establishes responsibilities for both the laboratory lead and a designated institutional safety contact.
The company says safeguards continue after activation through monitoring and enforcement, with additional consideration of approved research contexts for registered high-sensitivity use cases.
Eligible principal investigators and lab leads can now apply through the Rosalind Academic Plan. GPT-Rosalind access becomes available following approval, with no application closing date specified in the announcement.
