Salesforce has pledged free Slack Enterprise access for students at participating UK colleges and universities, aiming to give them experience of workplace collaboration and AI tools before graduation. Institutions can register their interest, with access organized through their college or university rather than individual student accounts.

Announced at AIforce World Tour London, the initiative targets millions of students in higher education and further education, which includes college-based academic and vocational study. That is the intended reach of the offer, rather than a confirmed number of students enrolled.

Participation comes with requirements. Institutions need an active Slack plan, and student access is limited to those aged 16 and over. Colleges and universities will administer accounts and set permissions, data retention policies and safeguards, including metered access to Slack’s AI features and Slackbot.

Bringing workplace AI into campus life

Slack combines conversations, files and collaboration tools in a shared workspace. Salesforce envisages colleges and universities using it to connect students with tutors, support distance-learning communities and organize campus services.

Slackbot, included with Slack Enterprise, answers questions in plain language using workspace files and discussions that it has permission to access. Institutions can also introduce AI agents into channels to respond to student service queries, coordinate study groups or assist research teams.

Zahra Bahrololoumi CBE, President & CEO of Salesforce UK & Ireland, frames the offer around responsible use across subjects: “Young people will define the next decade of UK business, and it’s imperative that students across all disciplines are able to learn to use AI responsibly.”

The company says institutions will retain control over how the tools are used and that student data will comply with UK data protection regulations and will not be used to train external AI models.

Practical experience before graduation

Salesforce links the initiative to a gap in workplace training, citing polling that found 61% of UK workers receive no AI training. Its stated ambition is to help students build digital fluency through everyday collaboration, including learning to assess AI-generated outputs and understand the tools’ limits.

Professor Ashley Braganza, Chair in Business Transformation and Director of the Centre for AI: Social and Digital Innovation at Brunel University of London, says: “Giving higher and further education institutions access to Slack and tools like Slackbot enables students to build the practical collaboration and digital skills employers are looking for.”

The pledge forms part of Salesforce’s $6 billion commitment to its UK business through 2030. It follows the expansion of its London AI Campus and sits alongside Future Trailblazers, an employee-led AI literacy program that Salesforce says has trained 14,500 students across the UK and Ireland since launching earlier this year.

Colleges and universities can now submit an expression of interest for follow-up by Salesforce’s UK education team. Students cannot sign up individually; access must come through a participating institution.
