Microsoft names Kate Maxwell Worldwide Government, Defense & Intelligence Industry Lead
The former Chief Technology Officer and Education Industry Lead began the Microsoft Frontier Company role in July 2026.

Microsoft has named Kate Maxwell Worldwide Government, Defense & Intelligence Industry Lead, moving the former Worldwide Public Sector technology chief into a global role focused on AI-enabled work for government, defense and intelligence customers.
Maxwell began the position in July 2026 after serving as Chief Technology Officer, Worldwide Public Sector from January to July. She announced the appointment on LinkedIn following a week with Microsoft leaders and teams in Seattle.
The role sits within Microsoft Frontier Company, which Maxwell described as a new approach to working directly with customers on AI systems.
"Microsoft is making a significant bet on a new way of serving customers: helping design, build, and run mission-critical AI-enabled workloads that drive real customer outcomes," she wrote on LinkedIn.
In her LinkedIn post, Maxwell described the skills Microsoft Frontier Company is bringing to its customer work: "Microsoft Frontier Company brings a unique combination of skills including deep industry knowledge, change management and continuous improvement, and enterprise-grade forward deployed engineering. We look forward to working side-by-side with customers to shape the future."
Experience across defense and public sector technology
Maxwell's previous Microsoft roles cover several areas included in her new remit. She served as Chief Technology Officer, Defense & Intelligence, Worldwide Public Sector from November 2020 to November 2023 before becoming Education Industry Lead for Worldwide Public Sector.
Her earlier career included more than 16 years at Raytheon. Relevant positions included Technical Director for its Navigation & Modernization Solutions Portfolio, Chief Engineer for Product Support, Engineering Lead at its Indianapolis site and Founding Director of an Innovation Center.
Maxwell's professional profile states that she has more than two decades of experience supporting public sector customers globally, including work across cloud, edge computing and sovereignty approaches.
Education and STEM work
Before taking her latest Microsoft position, Maxwell served as Education Industry Lead from November 2023 to August 2025. She was also Interim President and CEO of TechPoint Youth between August and November 2025.
Her education work extends beyond corporate roles. Maxwell founded the Maxwell Scholarship for Women in Computing & Engineering in 2014 and describes herself as an advocate for STEM education and outreach.
She also serves as a board member and volunteer with TechPoint Foundation for Youth, an Indiana nonprofit that provides STEM learning opportunities for underserved and underrepresented students.
