ASSISTments releases free Claude connector and plans premium AI tier for fall

The teacher integration is available now, while ASSISTments Plus will target school systems using Illustrative Mathematics during the 2026-27 school year.

The ASSISTments Foundation has released a free connector that lets math teachers create standards-aligned practice materials through Anthropic's Claude, alongside plans for a premium AI tier for schools and districts in fall 2026.

The ASSISTments Connector for Claude is available to individual teachers now. ASSISTments Plus will add AI-powered data insights and instructional recommendations for school systems using Illustrative Mathematics.

The two offerings address different parts of math instruction. The connector supports teachers creating and adapting practice materials, while Plus is designed to convert student work into information for teachers and district leaders.

In a LinkedIn post, Britt Neuhaus, Co-Executive Director of The ASSISTments Foundation, described the teacher workflow: "The focus: help teachers create high-quality supplemental practice aligned to their curriculum. From there, everything flows into ASSISTments."

Neuhaus said ASSISTments is one of the first partners supporting Claude for Teachers and positioned the announcements as a deliberate expansion of the nonprofit's use of AI.

Claude connector keeps teachers in control

The free integration is designed to create custom problem variations aligned with teachers' standards and curricula. Teachers can review, edit and decide which materials are suitable for their students before transferring the work into ASSISTments.

The organization presents Claude as handling the initial content creation while teachers retain responsibility for the resulting assignment. It does not specify geographic availability or any additional access requirements for using the connector with Claude.

The connector is layered onto ASSISTments' existing math platform, which provides students with feedback and gives teachers access to assessment data.

ASSISTments Plus adds a district data layer

ASSISTments Plus is a premium tier for schools and districts that have invested in Illustrative Mathematics. Its planned AI Assignment Dashboard is designed to synthesize student work into recommended next steps, performance trends and targeted intervention groups.

The organization says it will add further AI features to Plus during the 2026-27 school year.

According to Neuhaus, the offering followed direct consultation with potential users: "ASSISTments Plus came out of six months of user and market research."

The existing free version of ASSISTments will continue alongside the premium tier. Neuhaus stated that commitment directly on LinkedIn: "We've always been proud of our commitment to offering an evidence-based solution for free, and that will continue."

Evidence for the new AI tools is still developing

ASSISTments cites its Tier-1 "Strong" Evidence for ESSA rating, based on independent randomized controlled trial validation, as the research foundation behind the two offerings. The announcement does not state that either the Claude connector or ASSISTments Plus has independently received that rating.

Neuhaus acknowledged that research into the organization's AI use cases is continuing: "Overall, I'd say ASSISTments has been a cautious mover on AI -- especially anything involving students directly. We're running multiple rigorous studies on a handful of key use cases."

The nonprofit says it intends to evaluate AI features through pilot studies, A/B tests and impact research. Its responsible AI commitments also cover bias monitoring, explainable outputs, data minimization and student privacy. ASSISTments says it complies with COPPA and is designed to help schools and districts meet FERPA requirements.

ASSISTments was developed at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 2003 by former middle school teachers Neil and Cristina Heffernan. The couple established The ASSISTments Foundation in 2019 to expand the platform.

The ASSISTments Connector for Claude is available now without charge. Schools and districts can contact the foundation about a fall 2026 pilot of ASSISTments Plus, although pricing has not been disclosed.
