U.S. Commerce plans $169 million investment across six Tech Hubs

The U.S. Department of Commerce intends to invest $169 million across six regional Tech Hubs, backing projects that connect advanced technology with domestic manufacturing, supply chains and workforce development.

The proposed awards will be made through the Economic Development Administration’s Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs program. They cover hubs in Virginia, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin, Missouri, Maine, Idaho, Wyoming and Kansas.

Commerce describes the funding as intended awards rather than completed investments. The six allocations range from $16 million for AI-enabled pharmaceutical manufacturing in Virginia to $38 million for critical minerals processing in Missouri.

Sharing the selections on LinkedIn, U.S. Deputy Secretary of Commerce Paul Dabbar wrote that the $169 million would “advance U.S. leadership in industries essential to our economic competitiveness and national security.”

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick says: “Today’s $169 million in EDA awards will advance critical manufacturing processes in pharmaceuticals, critical minerals, and nuclear energy, while accelerating the deployment of emerging technologies.”

“Through strategic investments with local backing, the Tech Hubs program empowers U.S. regions to emerge as global leaders in critical technologies over the next decade,” says Ben Page, Deputy Assistant Secretary and Chief Operating Officer, who is performing the nonexclusive duties and functions of the Assistant Secretary.

AI, quantum technology and critical materials

The Advanced Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Tech Hub in Virginia is set to receive $16 million to develop and scale AI-enabled pharmaceutical manufacturing within the United States.

A further $30 million is intended for the Bloch Quantum Tech Hub, which operates across Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The project will focus on expanding U.S. production of quantum materials, components and subsystems.

The largest proposed award, worth $38 million, will go to the Critical Minerals and Materials for Advanced Energy Tech Hub in Missouri. Its work will concentrate on converting minerals sourced within the region into critical materials for advanced manufacturing.

Nuclear energy and biological manufacturing

The Intermountain-West Nuclear Energy Corridor Tech Hub, covering Idaho and Wyoming, has been selected for $31 million.

Commerce says the investment will be used to accelerate reactor deployment, support the commercialization of next-generation reactors and strengthen U.S. energy security. The announcement does not specify which reactor projects or technologies will receive support.

The Kansas City BioSecure Manufacturing Tech Hub will receive an intended $34 million allocation across Kansas and Missouri. Its stated remit includes modernizing manufacturing processes, retooling domestic supply chains and helping to convert biological discoveries into production at scale.

EDA positions the wider Tech Hubs program as a regional economic development initiative intended to support American jobs, innovation and collaboration. The agency says it invests in areas with the talent and existing assets to build positions in critical technologies.

The Forest Bioproducts Advanced Manufacturing Tech Hub in Maine is set to receive $20 million to support forest-based technologies and domestic supply chains.

Of the six project descriptions released by Commerce, the Maine allocation most explicitly connects the investment with education and skills infrastructure. It will bring together state organizations, universities, industry and workforce partners to deliver the hub’s work.
